Wolgan Valley

The beautiful Wolgan Valley is approximately three hour’s drive west of Sydney. It is located in the Blue Mountains World Heritage listed National Park and is bordered by the Gardens of Stone National Park and Wollemi National Park.

The Wolgan Valley is a long, narrow valley with tall sandstone cliffs on either side. The Wolgan River flows through the Valley and has cut a deep gorge through the sandstone at its narrowest point.

This pristine valley is virtually untouched by development except for the exclusive Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa which opened in October 2009.

Indigenous Australians inhabited the valley for thousands of years and the name Wolgan comes from a local Aboriginal word “wolga” – a climbing shrub known in English as Australian Clematis, or Old Man’s Beard. There are some significant Aboriginal sites in the Wolgan Valley including hand stencils near Wolgan Gap and buriel sites.

The Wolgan Valley is about a three hour drive from Sydney. Take the Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains to Lithgow then on to Lisdale. At Lisdale turn right onto Wolgan Road.

Wolgan Road winds down through ‘The Gap’ and the views of the escarpment and valley below are spectacular.

Newnes

Located at the end of the Wolgan Valley, Newnes is about 47 kms from Lithgow along Wolgan Rd, or a one hour 20 minute drive.

Newnes was the site of shale oil-mining operations from 1906-32. People now visit Newnes to walk the Wolgan Valley Heritage Trail and to see the glow worms in the historic railway tunnel.
