Megalong Valley
If you are travelling west from Sydney, the beautiful Megalong Valley can be accessed from Blackheath. Turn left at the lights at Blackheath Station and follow the signs to the Megalong Valley. As you drop down from the escarpment, stop at Hargraves Lookout for views over the valley.
The Megalong Valley is an area of farmlands and wilderness - a place where visitors can enjoy nature - horseriding, bushwalking, camping or picnicking. It is a peaceful and relaxing escape where you can savour country hospitality - just two hours from Sydney.
Mark Foy, who built the Hydro Majestic Hotel at Medlow Bath, had a hunting lodge in the valley. The remains of this building can still be seen today. Mark Foy grew vegetables in the valley to supply fresh produce to his hotel and had it hoisted up the cliff when required.
The Six Foot Track
The Six Foot Track is an historic 45km track from Katoomba to the Jenolan Vaves, via the Megalong Valley. The track starts at the Explorer’s Marked Tree near Katoomba then down through Nellies Glen, across the Megalong Valley and the Cox's River, across the ranges to Jenolan Caves Road, and finishes at the Jenolan Caves.
In 1879 most people reached the Jenolan Caves by taking a train to Mt Victoria and then a coach to the caves. Not happy about being by-passed, the people of Katoomba decided to establish a bridal track as a short-cut between Katoomba and the Jenolan Caves. The track was surveyed in 1884 and the first recorded journey along the finished track was in 1887 by Lord Carrington.
By the 1930s the track fell into disrepair however was reopened in 1984 after reconstruction. It is referred to as The Six Foot Track due to the original specification that it be six foot wide.
In 1984 The Six Foot Track Marathon was held for the first time and has been an annual event ever since (in March).
