The Chalet was Built in 1892, The Chalet Guesthouse and Studio is a 4-star AAA rated, luxury accommodation venue set in extensive private gardens in the quiet village of Medlow Bath. The heritage listed guesthouse features a private collection of contemporary Australian art throughout, an original period dining room with open fireplace, and a clay tennis court. All guest rooms have modern en-suites. The Chalet only has a seven guest rooms so you can be assured of personalised service that can’t be found in the large venues.
Centrally located in the Upper Blue Mountains, The Chalet is only minutes from the major attractions of Wentworth Falls, Leura, Katoomba, Blackheath and Mt Victoria. It is close to the historic Jenolan Caves and is an ideal base for bushwalking or exploring the complex diversity of the Blue Mountains and its environs.
The Chalet Guesthouse and Studio
Special events are held during the year, including dinners, exhibitions, music recitals, Easter, Yulefest, Christmas and New Year. The dining room is an ideal venue for private functions and conferences for up to 60 people.
The Chalet is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the Blue Mountains. Away from the noise and crowds but still close to all of the fun attractions the Upper Mountains have to offer, including mountain gardens, bush walks, boutique shops, views, antiques, markets, fine dining, horse riding, golf, bric-a-brac, music, festivals, day spas and more.
Artist Studio
David Middlebrook has an art career spanning over twenty five years and includes thirty solo exhibitions along the east coast of Australia (Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane and Newcastle). His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including 9 Regional Galleries, and he has received numerous awards including the Bendigo Bank Tattersall's National Landscape Art Award.
Throughout the year The Chalet offers classes in drawing and painting which are available for the novice through to the experienced, with packages including accommodation and meals. For information on the different classes and dates please visit our Studio page.
A brief history of The Chalet
The Chalet Guesthouse and Studio was built in 1892 by William Eyre. The architectural features of The Chalet have been described as “Victorian carpenter vernacular” and have remained mostly intact with modest alterations and a wing added to accommodate the changing needs of patrons and guesthouse operators, and now a fully working artist studio.
It had various owners and names between its sale by Eyre in 1894 and its purchase in 1904 by Mark Foy. In 1904 Mark Foy opened the “Hydropathic Establishment”, now known as the Hydro Majestic, across the railway line on the main road.
Elizabeth Mackin bought adjoining land as well as the house in 1905. The Macken family were associated with the house until at least 1920.
The house became a guesthouse in the mid-1920s, known as ‘Uniacke’s Bush Hotel’. An advertisement from the time boasts “First-class Table. Six Bathrooms and Showers. Excellent Hot Water Service. Electric Light and Radiators. Fine Dining and Dance Hall. Open-air Spray Bath. Three Tennis Courts. Own Poultry, Vegetables and Fruit.” It later became more familiarly known as ‘Unie’s Bush Hotel’.
With a change of ownership to Goodsir came a name change in the early 1930s to ‘The Bush House’. The next owners (1934-36), Mr Hebden and Mrs Emily Inman, changed the name to ‘The Chalet’, the name it has retained ever since.
In 1936 John Robert Warner King, a chef with international experience, bought ‘The Chalet’ with his wife Hilda and son John. The operated the guesthouse and restaurant as a successful venture until they sold it in 1959.
Dan and Paula Taylor owned The Chalet from 1959 to 1976. Paula was a radio entertainer in Brisbane during WWII and would compose bush folk songs to entertain the guests.
Between 1976 and 2001 The Chalet has remained in operation as a guesthouse and restaurant with a series of owners and hosts.
In 2001 Jo and Norm Hill purchased The Chalet to pursue their dream to rejuvenate The Chalet into a boutique hotel style bed and breakfast. They restored the property and added the private ensuites to each guest room. Their passion and love for The Chalet resulted in a new lease on life for the guesthouse and a AAA 4-star rating. In 2010 Jo and Norm decided to retire to nearby Blackheath.
YULEFEST 2011
The Chalet is once again celebrating Christmas in July, or Yulefest as many call it, for six weeks from 2 July until 13 August. Each Saturday evening is a special three-course Yulefest dinner, complimentary drink on arrival, live entertainment, open log fire and our dining room decorated for Christmas. Great fun for all. You can either book for dinner only, or take up one of our great value for money accommodation packages.
Accommodation Friday and Saturday night includes Yulefest dinner. 2 night minimum.

Location:

For guests that would like to do some bushwalking
there is a major network of tracks around Medlow Bath, mostly in the area between the Hydro Majestic and the cliffs. These are generally well constructed, although in the cases of the ones to get below the cliffs, somewhat exposed. A pleasant day's walk can be had wandering around the paths above the cliffs, with excellent views of the Megalong Valley and Shipley Plateau. If you are comfortable with a bit of exposure, visit the Colosseum, or take the walk down to the Blackheath Glen Picnic Area down in the Megalong Valley.
Medlow Bath lies on the Great Western Highway about 6km past Katoomba as you head west. The Hydro Majestic Hotel is on the left side of the road before you cross the railway line, and is impossible to miss.

Hi Ken, Thank you for the high ratings in the various categories, and in particular the one for service, we are flattered. I appreciate your comment about the room size and agree your room was smaller. The other rooms are larger with plenty of storage space. Unfortunately the "Christmas in July" season has been very popular and booked up early so unfortunately at the time of booking we only had the smaller room available.
