Description:

"We were dumbstruck by how beautiful it is. It is truly an oasis in the mountains." Grant and Sharlene "This has been an amazing 3 days for us. We feel so fortunate in having found you... Your creativity is truly amazing, all the mod cons with old world and eco sensitive charm. Leura is quite the best spot from which to see the Blue Mountains." Carol and John Shorrock -Minneapolis USA

Old Leura Dairy is situated in Leura in the midst of the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains - close to Sydney, just over a one hour drive, and yet a world of its own.

Leura itself offers many attractions, cafes, restaurants, art galleries, boutique shops, bush walking activities, "hard" and "soft" eco-tourism and, for the golfing enthusiasts or corporate golfing event, we have wonderful courses just a 5 minute drive away.

Old Leura Dairy is a 4 star property that is as unique as its surroundings.

The Straw Bale house attracts much attention from our guests with its many comfortable areas, extensive use of recycled materials and reclaimed treasures and, of course, the beautiful straw bale walls. 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms it sleeps up to 11 people.

The Worker's Cottage is the original shelter for the "workers" of the dairy. While retaining its charming, old world personality it contains all the comforts of today. 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms allow comfortable accommodation for up to 6 people.

The Milking Shed - enjoy echoes of the past while luxuriating in comforts of the present. A snug hideaway for 2 in the original hayloft and a slow combustion stove all add up to a wonderful holiday. Sleeps up to 4.

The Studio is cute, quaint and cosy. This delightful little nook sleeps 2 (twin or king).

Buttercup Barn - is a sweet and enchanting retreat. A tranquil loft bedroom highlights leafy views. Your own courtyard is glorious in summer and a slow combustion fire is perfect for chilly winter evenings. Indulge yourself while you immerse in bubbles of essential oils in the antique claw foot bath. Sleeps 2 (twin or king).

Moo Manor is comfortable, spacious and homey. Bird symphonies play for you while you soak up nature on the large, covered deck. Enjoy luxury while discovering unexpected features throughout. A large kitchen, slow combustion fire and claw foot bath are just some of the many treats to be found. Perfect for a family or a friend’s escape with 2 bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms. Sleeps up to 4.

Delivering four star comfort and facilities Old Leura Dairy is an award winning Eco-Tourism Retreat, has featured internationally on Television and widespread printed media as well as extensive local coverage including the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian, House and Garden, coffee table publications and twice filmed for Foxtel.

It is the perfect Mountain venue.

Hot Tub for all guests
An old milk vat that was used to collect and cool milk on a dairy has been converted to heat water. Fits 10 people if you dont mind getting friendly!
You are unlikely to ever experience another hot tub like this one.
Soak your cares away whilst snow softly drifts down around you or gaze up at the stars on a warm summer's night. A really special feature is that it is an outdoor hot tub that is shared by all 4 properties. What a great way to meet new people!! This hot tub is one of a kind.

Water is as life sustaining as the air we breathe. Water therapies,
particularly those involving warm water combined with massage, have proven effective throughout the centuries. Spa and hot tub water therapies are highly valued for their relaxing, rejuvenating, and naturally rehabilitative qualities, and our unusual hot tub will remain a favourite social setting.

About Leura:

Leura is a very pretty town with a main street perfect for strolling and
browsing. By day enjoy the many cafes, interesting shops and galleries. At night, feel the romance as the street twinkles with fairy lights. Take in sweeping views from the Sublime Point Lookout at the end of Sublime Point Road. Other lookouts are at the Gordon Falls Reserve in Olympian Parade and the Leura Cascades off Cliff Drive.

The town is famous for its gardens and holds a garden festival every October when residents open their gates to visitors. The cooler climate suits many varieties of flowers and shrubs, which will not grow around Sydney. Leura's showcase is the Everglades Gardens at 37 Everglades Avenue. The garden was created by Paul Sorenson, acclaimed as Australia's master gardener, in the mid 1930s. Covering 6 hectares it is a formal garden of trees and shrubs. The Art Deco house is filled with memorabilia. Open daily 10am to 5pm (phone 4784 1938). The property is listed by The National Trust as part of Australia's heritage.

Big and little children can enjoy the Leuralla Toy and Railway Museum, housed in a historic mansion at the corner of Olympian Parade and Balmoral Road. It claims to have the largest collection in Australia of toys, dolls, teddy bears and model railways. Open daily 10am to 5pm (phone 4784 1169). Leura has several other galleries, including The Candy Store with displays of nostalgia, including postcards and ornate tins. Leura also has a golf course near the Fairmont Resort, and several up-market restaurants. Katoomba is 3 kilometres farther on.

Leura also has a very good golf course and several up-market restaurants. Katoomba and the world famous three sisters rock formations are just 3 kilometres up the mountain.

The Milking Shed – Open plan with hayloft 1 ½ bathroom 1 king & 2 single (or 4 single) The Milking Shed The Milking Shed was the most fun of all to transform. The integrity of the structure was maintained as we enhanced its inherent ambience. Retaining the quirks and characters of its chequered history, it was a labour of love.

A special treat is the outdoor hot tub!!

Enjoy echoes of contented cows lowing while you savour the warm fire, watch television or tune out to some of your favourite CDs. Or sleep the morning away up on the original hayloft which now houses a great, big king size bed with a fluffy, feather doonah. The original barn doors are still in place for you to fling open and let the sun shine in or keep closed for an intimate atmosphere.

Timber, old tin, stained glass windows, an antique claw foot bath and wrought iron all add to the overall effect of beauty and comfort.

1 ½ bathrooms plus an additional 2 single beds make this a versatile retreat.

The Straw Bale House is a masterpiece of ingenuity. It consists of 5 bedrooms - each with a king size bed or 2 single beds, and 3 bathrooms. The Straw Bale House sleeps 11.

Welcome to the Straw Bale House! The passive solar design of this magnificent house and the half metre thick walls made of straw ensure warmth in winter and cool in summer. 80% recycled materials add beauty and character of a unique design. Timbers from an old jetty on the Parramatta River, the luggage rack from a 1927 Plymouth, 7 metre bush poles, rusted corrugated iron, doors and windows from the Queen Victoria Hospital are only some of the creative materials used in the construction of this house. Filled with handcrafted furniture and fittings, and rustic treasures collected from 6 years of active auction hunting you will find every corner brings a new surprise. The house is comprised of 2 wings – a living wing and a sleeping wing. Perfect for those who want to talk by the open fire into the wee hours while others are ready for cuddling down to sleep. The co joining tower is a picture gallery of enchanting, old, leadlight windows.

In the living wing we have 2 distinct styles of bedrooms. Upstairs are 2 large sunny bedrooms with timber floors, king size beds (can be split to accommodate twin share), and a shared ensuite bathroom where you can have a soak in the large antique claw foot bath. Downstairs enjoy 2 really charming, rustic bedrooms which again feature king size beds, rendered straw bale walls, carpet, and a shared ensuite with claw foot bath.

The family room is located on this floor and here you will find the TV and video, a 3rd bathroom with shower, and a slow combustion stove next to the mud brick wall. At the top of the tower is our "Hidey Hole" bedroom, a snug, secret hideaway. Just to be extra sure you are warm and snug for your stay this wing also has central heating.

Softly shaped rendered walls are accentuated by the contrast of triangular windows, and angles and shapes throughout the house. (Come and see our “Truth Window” which displays our straw walls!) Numerous and varied areas throughout the house encourage a wide range of activities to maximise the enjoyment of your stay in the world famous Blue Mountains. This house will sleep up to 11 people.

Enjoy echoes of contented cows lowing while you savour the warm fire, watch television or tune out to some of your favourite CDs. Scenic Drives

Let us advise you on the best routes to see the best of the Blue Mountains and west of the Dividing Range to suit your time and interests.

Getting There:

A 1 1/2 hour drive from Sydney via the M2 or M4 and onto the Great Western Highway brings your directly to Leura. Continue on the highway through the lights at Leura. The 3rd street on the right will be Kings Road. Take this road and follow it to the T intersection with Mount Street. Old Leura Dairy is on this corner.

There is a taxi rank immediately outside the train station at Leura. A 3 minute drive (and approximately $7.00) will take you to Old Leura Dairy.

Driving Instructions for Old Leura Dairy from Sydney.

1. Join the M4 Freeway from Parramatta Road Strathfield or at any number of points further west. Stay on the Freeway following the signs to Penrith. Continue on past the Penrith exits.

2. Shortly after passing Penrith you begin the climb into the Blue Mountains and soon will see black and white signs indicating the end of the M4 and commencement of the Great Western Highway (32). Old Leura Dairy is approximately 40 km from this point. You will pass through or by a number of small villages such as Glenbrook, Springwood, and Lawson. Speed limits vary so be aware. Wentworth Falls is the village immediately before Leura.

3. After passing through Wentworth Falls continue on the highway until you reach a large blue sign indicating Leura Mall; Leura Village Centre. Take this off ramp to the top and turn right (away from the village shopping centre) through the traffic circle. Then take the first left onto Den Hogan Drive (10 meters from traffic circle and it looks like an on ramp to the highway) and follow this road until you reach a fork in the road. The right hand road of this fork is Mount Street and will lead you to the corner of Kings Road. Old Leura Dairy is located on your left and fronts onto Mount Street, Kings Road and Eastview Avenue. The reception is located on the Eastview Avenue side of the dairy and the hours are variable but are generally Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm.

Driving instructions to old Leura Dairy from the West

1. You will be driving through the Blue Mountains on the Great Western Highway. At the top of the mountain range is the township of Mount Victoria. Continuing down the mountain you will arrive at Blackheath, then Medlow Bath and finally Katoomba which is the town immediately before Leura. Still on the Great Western Highway you will pass the Edge Cinema on your left and eventually see (also on your left) a large sign indicating Leura Mall. Immediately after this sign is a little dogleg on your left that will take you into Eastview Avenue. Take this exit and follow the road to the right all the way to the bottom of the street until you reach the corner of Kings Road. The office is located on this corner on the right and fronts onto Eastview Avenue.
