Clarence/Dargan/Bell

Clarence

Clarence is located on the Bells Line of Road between Bell and Lithgow.

Clarence is best known as home to the Zig-Zag Railway. The trains begin and end their journey at Clarence Station.

Zig-Zag Railway at Clarence Station

The Zig Zag Railway was built in the 1800s. It was a remarkable engineering feat in its time with the construction of tunnels and sandstone viaducts to allow for steep descent/ascent of the trains.

Visitors can ride on vintage rail motors or steam trains and follow the original 1860s railway through Clarence tunnel and over sandstone viaducts to Top Points Reversing Station. They then travel down Bottom Points Station where the steam engines take water and reverse for the steep climb back up the hill.

There are three trains daily (except Christmas Day) - 11am, 1pm and 3pm departing from Clarence (Bells Line of Road, 10kms east of Lithgow).

On Sundays, extra trains run at 9.40am, 11.40am and 1.40pm.

The Steam Train runs Sat, Sun, Wed and during school holidays. The Rail Motor tours run other days and Sundays.

Zig Zag Railway also run Wizards Express and Day Out With Thomas events.
